In 1943, World War II was in full force—and copper was in short supply. Therefore, the government authorized the use of zinc-coated steel for America’s pennies instead of copper. The Lincoln Penny was minted in steel for one year only, at three different mints—Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco.
