1908 “No Motto” $20 Saint Gaudens
Double Eagle
The Gold Coin without “In God We Trust”
At the dawn of the 20th century, American coinage was in an abysmal state. By 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt had decided to take matters into his own hands when he hired his friend, renowned sculptor Augustus St. Gaudens, to redesign U.S. gold coins. It took three years before his final masterpiece would be produced in 1907, a coin now hailed as one of the most beautiful in the world. But when the public saw that the motto “In God We Trust” had been omitted from the coin (on Roosevelt’s orders), an outcry ensued. An outraged congress ordered the motto be returned to the Double Eagle, which it was, halfway through the mintage of 1908. That’s why the 1908 “No Motto” $20 Double Eagle, one of only two Saint Gaudens Double Eagles ever struck without “In God We Trust,” has become so desirable to collectors. It’s an affordable rarity. This is just one reason this coin is one our Mint Master believes every collector should own -- and he’s willing to back that up with a very special VIP price.
