The 1926 Peace Dollar
The mid 1920s were a time of great religious turmoil in America over the debate between the bible and evolution. The conflict was most famously dramatized in the Scopes Monkey trial, where Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan faced off against each other pitting evolution against creationism.
In a display of his faith and support of the bible, John Sinnock, the chief engraver of the U.S. Mint, decided to put GOD front and center. He highlighted GOD in the motto “In GOD We Trust” on the front of the 1926 Peace Dollar so that it rose above the rest of the motto. His single act turned a normal issue dollar into a unique and collectible coin among all American dollars – America’s only “GOD” Dollar.
