Every third Sunday in June, we pay tribute to one of the most important people in our lives – our father. Father's Day originated in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910, when Sonora Smart Dodd established the first celebration at the YMCA. Dodd was inspired to create the holiday after hearing a sermon about Mother's Day. Dodd’s father, William Jackson Smart, was a Civil War veteran who raised six children as a single parent. Dodd worked tirelessly to promote the day, but it did not become a permanent national holiday until 1972.
