Product Description

In the 1960s, you were still able to get Silver Dollars at face value from your local bank. As the prices of silver started to rise, demand for coins began to skyrocket! So Congress authorized the resumption of silver dollar minting and President Johnson issued an order for the Denver Mint to begin production. The Peace dollar design was chosen for the new dollar and dies were made. Despite heavy opposition, 316,076 coins were minted, but the White House soon bowed to pressure, ordering the entire mintage to be destroyed. As of today, no 1964 Peace Dollars have ever been found. Now, National Collector’s Mint announces the special striking of the 1964 Peace Dollar. This non-circulating Cook Islands legal tender dollar is clad in 71 mgs of .999 Pure Silver and features the original Miss Liberty design on the obverse. On the reverse the classic American Eagle appears along with the Cook Islands imprimatur and the all-important “D” mint-mark.
