In early 2000, the U.S. Government issued the first Sacagawea “Golden” Dollar, and the first new coin of the Millennium. The design, by noted sculptor Glenna Goodacre, was chosen to honor the young Shoshone Indian girl Sacagawea (translated as “Bird Woman”). She assisted Lewis and Clark as an interpreter and guide on their historic Corps of Discovery expedition to the Pacific Northwest in 1804. It obverse depicts SacaJawea carrying her newborn son, Jean Baptiste, and the reverse has a magnificent eagle soaring in flight.
